Advice to the President is a nonpartisan web site where a selection of the ideas and reports produced by analysts, scholars, and policymakers to help shape the agenda of the Obama administration are being aggregated. Now that the American public has elected a new president, and as always at a time when new administrations are being formed, it is ideas that we at Carnegie Corporation believe should determine how leaders respond to the great problems they face.

This is not an exhaustive site that collects every report produced on every subject, but we hope it links you to suggestions that represent many points of view and a wide spectrum of research, ideas, analysis, arguments, and commitment by those who believe in the great American idea of debate and problem solving. We have chosen some of the most critical issues facing the country and turned to established institutions that have produced work they hope will help to guide President Obama.

We believe you will find these links to institutions and reports helpful because they collect, in one place, some of the best work around subjects of great importance. Please let us know if you have suggestions or additions.

Statement by Vartan Gregorian

President of Carnegie Corporation of New York

“We the people” of the United States care deeply about our country. Across the political spectrum and from all walks of life, Americans share a belief in the promise of democracy and the ideals of equality and freedom set out in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. How can the role of ideas continue to play an important role in our civic life? That is a question the Board of Trustees of Carnegie Corporation of New York have asked. This site is one attempt to respond to that question. We offer it as a public service and as a celebration of those who work in the spirit of our forefathers to ensure our nation is renewed, energetic and committed to finding solutions to the problems that face our nation and the world.
